Of the Firsts

Now that the pee-poop-feed routine has got marked up to pee-poop-play-eat mushy mess- poop-play-sleep-eat some more, life has gotten rather exciting. From the mashed up food variety to try out to the commando crawling to the feet nibbling gourmets..it's an exhausting line up!

So obviously i am keenly tuned to what will fascinate my little one and eagerly anticipating his 'firsts' of things.. the crawling, the walking, the calling me 'momma'..like the real one.. not the 'oh, he just said momma' when he went 'baaaa...naaa...gaaa...maaa..moomaaa'. yeah well, no luck with any of those.. he refuses to crawl.. forget walk.. even making him sit at a place for more than 3 seconds is an effort! Guess we have a long way to go. But that's fine..

What is NOT fine is his 'first' of things that we can live without.. like his first viral fever which came with loads of vomiting and refusal to feed..my poor baby..dehydrated and tired refusing to talk or play.. just clung to me making slow grunting noise..and me...helpless..

Now we well educated individuals know that a viral takes 3 -5 days to clear and thank you for reminding me! What you don't know is how looking at your baby like that can cause physical pain in your heart and mind stops seeing logic..for a very long time...till maybe..the baby makes a slight effort to smile at you.. an indication that my world will be a happy place soon!

Anyway, thought i should tell you what worked for us in this scenario:

1. after a major puking episode, don't feed the baby for atleast 1/2 an hr.. let the nausea subside even if he looks miserable and dehydrated. put him in your arms, shut your eyes, calm down and calm him down..It will work.. and after he seems better, let him fall asleep. If you want to feed stick to BM just enough to hydrate him and not as a meal.

2. If baby has puked out the medicine immediately, you can administer half the dose after half an hr. But consult your doc to be absolutely sure.

3. put the baby on your shoulders and pat his back after the vomiting episode. laying him down might make him more nauseous and irritable.

4. In case of fever, keep him in an A/c room. ( if you live in India and the temp outside is 37 degrees). Also we have an air purifier ( by Eureka Forbes) it really helped him feel better. controlled environment - pure air - comfortable clothing  saw the fever coming down and color return to cheeks.

5. Keep his favorite toys within his reach. he needs to see you when he opens his eyes and his toys when he looks around.

6. Its ok if he refuses to eat..as long as he is drinking either BM/juices/water..basically as long as he is hydrated..it is OK. He will eat. Give him time.Just breathe.

7. Remember that your baby can sense your anxiousness..the more worked up you are..the more worked up he will get. Stay calm.. even if he is vomiting all over you..stay calm..tell him that it is ok..and please don't yell..even for a tissue..smile..at yourself and him..he will know that it's ok to feel a little sick today.. and it really is.Tomorrow is a new day.
